Junior Kindergarten/Kindergarten

We love welcoming our littlest learners into the classroom. Sometimes this can feel like a big step as your little ones grow up and prepare to be away from home for the day, but our dedicated teachers provide a nurturing home-away-from-home environment for our youngest students.

Students in our Grammar School are at an age where they love to learn and wonder at God’s creation. We provide an atmosphere for our most exuberant learners to inquire, explore, and experience creation, using their senses as they learn.

We know that children aren’t meant to sit at a desk all day, so we incorporate movement built in throughout the day and dedicated time for rest and play.

It is a privilege to be able to point our students toward the True, the Good, and the Beautiful in every lesson, thereby pointing them to Christ as we learn math, phonics, read beautiful stories, learn through nature study, and so much more.

Each of our Grammar School classrooms are assigned a virtue focus for the year. In Junior Kindergarten the virtue is patience and in Kindergarten it is obedience. These virtues inform how we disciple our students in virtuous classroom behavior and in their relationships with their classmates, helping them to be more like Christ every day.

Our youngest students are taught using a scientifically-proven, Orton-Gillingham-based approach to reading. Students work towards phonemic and phonological awareness in interactive drills, chants, song, and kinesthetic activities.

Students in Junior Kindergarten are taught patterns, puzzles, and numerical fluency, using interactive activities.

Students in Kindergarten are taught early math skills using Singapore Dimensions curriculum.

We believe students should be outdoors and experiencing fresh air as much as possible. Grammar School students have two 25-minute outdoor recesses daily, even in the winter.

All of our students eat lunch at the same time. Students of all ages share lunch tables to facilitate community, camaraderie, fellowship, and mentorship between students of different ages. This provides for a family atmosphere at lunch for everyone, and it is something that makes Oakdale unique.
