The music and art programs at Oakdale Academy are designed to give students an appreciation for beauty and the tools to create artistic works that honor God. For instance, students perform dramatic presentations of memorized Bible passages, poetry, and other literary works. • Fine Art at Oakdale Academy

In music, students in the lower school learn about basic music theory, harmony, musical concepts, and note reading.

Third grade students also spend time with instrumental music, starting with song flutes/recorders.

Students are introduced to the different families of instruments and given the opportunity to listen to music of different composers.

Lower School Music Performances:

  • Classroom presentations
  • Veterans & Grandparents Day
  • Two music concerts per year

The Upper School offers Vocal Ensemble Choir for grades seventh through twelfth to further teach them to sing joyfully to the Lord. They gain an understanding of the technique for body alignment, breathing focus and strength of vocal tone. They also focus on theory for pitch and rhythm reading as well as learn ear training for scales, intervals and chordal patterns. There are four vocal ensemble choir performances each year.

Instrumental Music

The instrumental music program at Oakdale Academy supports the mission of our school by aiding in the development of personal diligence, love of learning and the ability to perceive and perform beauty through instrumental music.

We currently offer three different levels of instruction. Our current classes include:

  • Beginning Strings and Beginning Band
  • Intermediate Strings and Intermediate Band
  • Advanced Strings and Concert Band

Annual concerts showcase their talents and give students performance experience. We invite you to attend our upcoming performances and encourage you to bring a friend and enjoy the beauty of music created by our Oakdale students.

  • Veterans Day Performance

  • Spring Concert
  • Graduation

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” – Plato

Students study and learn the elements of art from a biblical perspective, and create lovely pieces in a wide variety of media. In the Lower School, art classes encourage slow, careful, and clean work and an appreciation for quality craftsmanship. Students learn specific techniques for using drawing and painting media and practice proper care of materials. As is age-appropriate, there is a strong emphasis on developing accurate observational drawing skills. Students will also acquire a familiarity with the great works of art with the purpose of using them as inspiration for aesthetics and technique.

Art is an elective in the Upper School. Students in seventh through twelfth grade have the opportunity to advance their skills in the following areas:

  • Draw from life, photographs, and copying master works or art
  • Consider proportion, shape, angle, value, color, and hard/soft edges in drawing and painting
  • Explore color theory exercises and painting techniques
  • Design compositions
  • Learn the major movements of art history

Annually, Oakdale sponsors a student art exhibit and competition by grade level.
